How DO we help with career pathways and how to get there ?
“ ...it’s just not the same as it was when I left school...”
Here's an invitation toParents/guardians
/caregivers to receive information on current trends in career development to support young people.
How Can You Help ??
Today, with the rapidly changing environment, our young people are faced with more opportunities to make decisions on many different career pathways. It is easy to often feel that our knowledge and expertise may not ‘fit in’ with current education, employment and training trends.
Adults are a major influence in the lives of growing
Children. Most people acknowledge the importance of keeping up with these changes (in order to provide the best information and advice to our children – and our future workforce !)
Some suggestions for how to support and keep up to date with the changing school and workforce trends:
Go to Career Expos and Open Days.
Get to know your child’s strengths and interests from teachers and others eg. mentors, employers, family etc.
Provide a space for appropriate study. Encourage a balance between study, work, rest and play.
Encourage them to undertake work experience while at school, and/or to access a casual job if appropriate.
Be aware of the Employability Skills that employers are seeking.
Provide encouragement for them to keep investigating options – the broader range the more likely they are to find one works for them.
Role model good time management, organisational and communication skills.
Visit training or education institutions and workplaces where convenient.
Where possible, provide support to participate in teams such as sports, church, charity/volunteer organisations
