Hear from Billie about her School-based Traineeship
So here’s the thing:
Ever dreamed of having a particular job? Chances are you can!!!
CONGRATULATIONS on being a participant of life in the 21st century and welcome aboard the “discovery of careers and jobs” journey! This is a REALLY good time to be working in Australia.
Did you know that:
there are Jobs not even invented yet that you might end up doing at some stage
you can expect to have up to 25 different jobs in your life and in heaps of different areas/occupations.
jobs you see today will probably change
you’ll probably do bits and pieces of training along the way - you know: updating your skills, or learning others.
Now we know that a whole bunch of you talk to your parents about careers, but did you know that their experiences in jobs and careers may have been limited? Many of your parents may have only had a couple of different jobs and you will probably have heaps! Your parents are often great people to chat about careers with because most of them have some experience in working and have loads of good stuff to tell you… But remember – you can also get information from lots of other places too and you can share this with them.
Basically, a career is a journey not a destination:
You know, like running a race, but instead of only the first person across the line getting the prize – it’s kinda like everyone who takes even just a step gets a prize (ok, so the prizes do vary, but eh – there are more finish lines than just the one)…
Or: think about train and cars: … Instead of being on a train where you can only get off at the station, you get to choose and drive your own car! Woohoo!! You get to choose if you drive a sports car, a Hummer, a 4WD, a motorbike or a bicycle! You get to stop where you like, drive the flats, go cross country or change directions as you go.
Your career will involve changing jobs, at times having lots of work and at times maybe a lack of work. The whole time you’ll be learning new skills that will help you change direction or stay on the same track.
What you’ll need for your trip is:
where to access information to add to your road map
how to research
how to get advice
how to keep up with changes, so that you can make good decisions along the way.
You will find lots of information to help you on Blue Chilli.
